Summer is almost here and, if you are anything like me, you are dreading it. Why? Because girls like us with fine, frizzy, unruly curls know that heat and humidity are our hair’s worst enemy. It is almost impossible to look good. But this time, I have summer beat, thanks to a Brazilian keratin treatment.
Why I Chose to Go Brazilian
If I had effortless romantic spirals cascading down my back like Venus or some other goddess, I would certainly leave my locks alone. But no. The gods did not smile down on me when it came to my hair, and my curls are crazy and random, kinky here, flat there, and frizzy all over. True, on super-humid days, with enough hair goo and what seemed to be hours of coaxing, I could actually make my curls look enviable. But this was rare. Usually after all that time and effort, my crowning glory was more like a crown of thorns. Or a bird’s nest. Horrible, in any case. And I’d end up yanking it back into a pony tail and braiding it. But I’m not 16, and I could never achieve a sophisticated pony tail befitting my slightly older than 16 (ahem) age.
The easiest solution was to whip out a flat iron and make it straight. At least I always knew what I was going to get 45 minutes later — long straight hair. That’s a style, right? Well, this is fine on temperate days, better on cold days, but let the sky even think about rain or a few drops of dew blow on an ocean breeze and my hair would fluff up and frizz out. Ugh. What a waste of time.
A hair stylist friend who knows how my hair misbehaves recommended the Brazilian hair straightening treatment over a permanent hair straightening and she was absolutely right to do so. The Brazilian keratin treatment was like a miracle. After spending several hours and a few hundred dollars at a salon, my hair was sleek and gorgeous. Be warned, when you finally get to wash the stuff out about four days later, your hair will most likely still have a wave to it. Mine did. But what you will discover is you can leave it alone, not even put any product on it, and it will look lovely. I swear I could hear angels singing. And when I want it straight, flat ironing takes about 10 to 15 minutes instead of 45. AND — wait for it — it does NOT frizz out in hot, humid weather!
Seriously, if you can relate to my tale of woe, then the Brazilian keratin treatment is definitely worth your consideration.
