It can be difficult to get an organized closet if you are unsure of what you need to do to make sure it is done correctly.
The most desirable condition for closet organizing is the presence of a lot of space. Walk-in closets the size of small bedrooms work the best. Of course, most of us do not have closets this size, so we have to work with the space we have available to us. There are some suggestions, though, that can make the process of learning how to organize a closet easier.
To begin with, make a plan. Know what you want to get out of the process so you know what you have to have to achieve those goals. A great number of design publications exist that can give you some ideas on closet organization beyond what is offered here.
Once you determine your closet organization goals you must then get the materials you are going to need. A lot of people think that closet organization is simply about getting a rod, a few shelves, and some bins. It is way more complicated than that. You have so many choices that it is easy to get overwhelmed if you aren’t careful.
Some of the more popular brands that make closet organizers are Easy Track, Honey-Can-Do, Household Essentials, Rubbermaid, and John Louis Home. Each one of these brands offers rods, shoe racks for closets, sweater racks, pants racks, and accessory organizers. There are wooden or plastic organizers and the majority of them can be put in quickly and easily by following the instructions.
However, some people might want additional stylish accents in their closets. In this case, you would be better off choosing a system from Household Essentials, Closet Maid, or Trend Lab. These are just some of the manufacturers that offer stylish boxes and other organizational items. You can get them in a variety of sizes, patterns, and colors and they can be used to store anything at all.
After you install your closet organization system, you will need to get your belongings organized. You should not include everything you removed from your closet. Donate some of it, especially those articles you have not worn in the past three years, that don’t fit, and that aren’t really presentable. This is actually a very freeing activity. And, you will have more room to go shopping.
Group your clothing by selecting one of the following methods:
- Group shirts in one area, pants in another area, skirts in another area, etc.
- Group clothing by color.
- Group ensembles together.
- Group clothes you wear a lot together at the front and group clothes you wear less often in the back.
Put your shoes into clear or open-ended boxes so you will be able to find what you need right away. Use hooks to store your purses and make them highly visible for when you need them. All other accessories should have their own organizational method as well. Getting an organized closet is going to save you time, make you happier, and give you more space. Why wouldn’t you do it?
